EMDR was originally developed to help people who have experienced psychological difficulties which originate from some kind of traumatic experience, such as sexual abuse, childhood neglect, road traffic accidents and violence. However there is now increasing evidence that EMDR is also successful in treating other complaints such as performance anxiety, self-esteem issues, phobias, and other trauma related anxiety disorders.
EMDR therapy has extensive evidence of its effectiveness. It is recommended by both the World Health Organization and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). It is unique among psychological therapies in that it uses bilateral sensorial stimulation (such as eye movements), to produce rapid processing of emotional memories.
Another unique feature of this therapy is that it may not be necessary to talk about the traumatic event in order to recover from its effects.
According to international trauma expert Bessel Van der Kolk “EMDR loosens up something in the mind/brain that gives people rapid access to loosely associated memories and images from their past. This seems to help them put the traumatic experience into a larger context or perspective” (From his book ‘The Body Keeps the Score’).

CFT is a powerful therapy that is designed to help people who experience high levels of shame and self-criticism and who may also find it difficult to receive compassion from others.
A key principle of CFT is that we can train ourselves to develop compassion for ourselves and others, and in turn this may improve our emotional balance, ability to affiliate with others and help us to foster the courage and wisdom we need to cope with difficult life events, trauma memories and the legacy of our attachment histories.
CFT is based on numerous research fields including those of evolutionary psychology, attachment theory, and neuroscience. The therapeutic processes are built on this science and there is also a growing evidence base for the effectiveness of CFT with a variety of mental health difficulties.
